Torah Portion Noach; "Noah's Ark" from a U.S. Naval Logistic Engineers Perspective: Genesis 6:9-11:32

Why does 'the ancient account of Noah's Ark, have more to do with the End Times than all of the troubling "News" our world is facing today;

about Oil prices, "wars, and rumors of wars"?

In his brilliant teaching on Torah portion Noach "Noah" (Genesis 6:9–11:32) at B'nai Shalom Messianic Congregation; on Erev Shabbat, Monte Judah the Founder of Lion and Lamb Ministries; gives us a compelling teaching of this foundational biblical account through the combined lenses of U.S. Naval logistical engineering, ancient history, and our unfolding "Last Days" prophetic horizon.

Presenting the "Logistics of Noah's Ark" to his Professional Colleagues:

Monte Judah had a professional background involving logistics engineering and naval operations. When given the floor to present on an engineering topic to fellow logistics analysts and engineers, he chose the blueprint of Noah's Ark as an operational case study. Rather than presenting a Sunday-school caricature, he treated the biblical specifications as a technical problem: volumetric cargo capacity, structural integrity, ventilation, husbandry, waste management, and draft stability.

The Meaning of "Noah" (Rest) vs. His Immense Task:

The Hebrew name Noach (נֹחַ) derives from the root meaning rest or comfort (Genesis 5:29: "This one will bring us comfort from our work and the toil of our hands"). While Noah was assigned the most labor-intensive construction and preservation assignment in human history, his name points to two realities:

  • The Sabbath archetype: Noah entered into God's provision—a vessel where God Himself closed the door and shouldered the preservation.

  • Rest from corruption: Noah's obedience gave humanity rest from an irredeemably violent and corrupted world order, bringing creation through judgment into a purified state.

The Nephilim and the Explosion of Violence:

The Nephilim (from the root nafal, "to fall" or "fallen ones") are introduced in Genesis 6:1–4 as the offspring of the "sons of God" (b'nai Elohim) and human women. In Judah’s teaching:

  • This illicit union produced unnatural, tyrannical giants who corrupted the seed of mankind and filled the earth with bloodshed.

  • The violence (in Hebrew: chamas, pronounced Hamas!) reached an unbearable peak because humanity had abandoned the Creator’s order in favor of demonic rebellion, genetic corruption, and lawless depravity, grieving the Lord to His heart.

Pangaea and the Pre-Flood "Terrarium" Atmosphere:

  •  Judah notes that the original landmass was unified into a single supercontinent before the “fountains of the great deep broke open” (Genesis 7:11). The catastrophic tectonic shift during the Flood fractured the crust, driving continental separation and mountain uplift.

  • The Terrarium Model:

  • Before the Flood, the "waters above the firmament" (Genesis 1:7) formed a protective vapor canopy encircling the globe. This created a uniform, hyperbaric, subtropical greenhouse—much like a sealed terrarium. It filtered harmful radiation, eliminated extreme polar-equatorial temperature differentials, fostered giant plant and animal growth, and accounted for the 900+ year lifespans of the patriarchs.

Sovereign Grace and the Gathering of the Animals:

Genesis 6:8 states that “Noah found grace (chen) in the eyes of the Lord.” Noah did not chase or corral wild beasts across continents. God Himself placed a migratory, instinctive impulse within the animals, drawing representative pairs (and sevens of clean animals) directly to the Ark. Noah’s grace was not self-earned perfection, but wholehearted covenant faithfulness (tzaddik tamim) in an era of universal rebellion.

Dimensions and Construction Logistics:

Using standard 18-inch cubits, the Ark measured:

  • Length: 450 feet (300 cubits)

  • Width: 75 feet (50 cubits)

  • Height: 45 feet (30 cubits)

  • Volume: Roughly 1.5 million cubic feet across three decks, equivalent to the cargo carrying capacity of more than 500 standard modern railroad stock cars.

Logistically, Noah had a building window of up to 100–120 years. Supported by his sons, family wealth, and likely hired labor using pre-Flood timber resources (gopher wood) and natural pitch (kofer—a word linguistically tied to atonement), they constructed a floating warehouse rather than an ocean cruiser.

The 6:1 Ratio and Modern Naval Architecture:

God specified a 6:1 length-to-beam ratio (300 cubits to 50 cubits):

  • In naval engineering, this ratio provides the optimum balance between roll resistance and pitch stability.

  • Modern cargo and transport supertankers rely heavily on ratios between 6:1 and 7:1. The Ark was virtually untippable; wave tanks and engineering models demonstrate that an Ark of these dimensions can tilt nearly 60 degrees in rough seas without capsizing.

Monte Judah’s Conclusion to the Engineers:

At the end of his presentation, Judah told his engineering colleagues:

"Not only is the story of Noah's Ark feasible—that all the animals could have been preserved that we have on the earth today, not only was mankind preserved, not only that they would have survived this cataclysmic flood—but it is highly probable... because this was God's design, not Noah's."

His point was that an untrained ancient shepherd-builder could never have stumbled upon modern naval displacement ratios by accident; the design originated with the Master Builder.

Prophetic Typology and the "Days of Noah":

  • The Parallel (Matthew 24:37): Messiah Yeshua warned, "As the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of Man be." Judah emphasizes that this refers to an age marked by widespread apathy, catastrophic violence, moral collapse, and open defiance of divine design.

  • Current Parallels:

  • Judah points out that society today possesses the power of total thermonuclear annihilation and is actively dismantling the foundational pillars of Genesis—denying the Creator, redefining marriage, rejecting biological binary gender ("male and female He created them"), and scapegoating biblical believers.

  • Peter's Warning to Scoffers (2 Peter 3):

  • Peter warned that in the last days, mockers would scoff, saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? All things continue as they were from the beginning." Their fundamental error is uniformitarianism—deliberately forgetting that God intervened cataclysmically through water once, and will intervene through fire again.

  • The Rainbow Covenant (Genesis 9):

  • God set the rainbow in the clouds as an unconditional covenant token that He would never destroy all flesh by a global flood again.

  • Why Fire Next Time?

  • Because water wiped out the physical surface, but fire permanently consumes, refines, and purges the spiritual and material stain of sin (2 Peter 3:10–12).

  • The Navy Perspective on Water vs. Fire:

  • As a U.S. Navy veteran, Judah observes that sailors understand damage control: a crew can fight, pump out, and compartmentalize rising seawater, but an out-of-control fire inside an enclosed vessel consumes oxygen, warps steel, generates toxic smoke, and offers no escape.

Noah as a Preacher of Righteousness; and the Pre-Tribulation Rapture Fallacy:

  • 100 Years of Pleading:

  • Noah was not merely a carpenter; 2 Peter 2:5 calls him a “preacher of righteousness.” For roughly a century, every hammer blow and plank placed was a visual sermon calling the world to repent. The surrounding populace mocked him because rain had never fallen in that manner, dismissing the threat until the day the floodgates opened.

  • Prophecy vs. Headline Anxiety:

  • Judah urges believers not to get consumed by geopolitical headlines (oil prices, wars, rumors of wars, Russia, or China). The Torah portions give the master blueprint: God judges wickedness, but protects His covenant people within the trial.

  • Preserved Through Judgment, Not Evacuated Beforehand:

    • Noah, his family, and Lot were not removed from the earth; they were sheltered and preserved in the midst of the earth while judgment fell around them.

    • In Judah's Messianic perspective, this dismantles the popular Pre-Tribulation Rapture doctrine (which he characterizes among modern fables;  (2 Timothy 3–4). The Torah pattern is never an escapist flight before trouble starts, but divine preservation and protection through the storm, leading into the restored Kingdom for all of eternity.
